As Ofcom reports it has been sent 1,000 complaints following singer Christina Aguilera’s sexually provocative pre-watershed performance on Saturday’s X Factor, the pop star has defended the raunchy routine.
The blonde bombshell’s act landed squarely in the “one for the dads” category, featuring writhing, scantily-clad female dancers surrounding the star as she belted out the title track from her new movie Burlesque.
Christina’s performance was in addition to a similarly saucy turn from R&B singer Rihanna on the same show.
However, at the premiere of Burlesque in London’s Leicester Square, Christina was unrepentant. “I don’t think there is such a thing as too raunchy when it comes to the art form of burlesque,” said the 29-year-old.
“It’s very empowering to women to feel confident in their own skin and in their bodies and this represents that. Everyone in the spotlight is judged and there are many opinions out there but I stick true to what I believe in.”
She added that she hoped to inspire rather than merely titillate by choosing the role of burlesque dancer Ali for her first movie role.
The singer is no stranger to shock tactics, turning in similarly provocative performances to promote her 2002 single Dirrty, causing her to be nicknamed Xtina.
However, while she may not have any qualms about stripping off in public, Christina – who recently separated from husband Jordan Bratman – admitted making the move into films was a daunting prospect.
“It was scary at times. Being a newcomer I had a lot of challenges every day. I had to really focus,” she said.
“I would like to do more films in the future, maybe a departure from musicals. I’ve definitely caught the bug.”
