UCHE
|
The fact that Uché was born on the 29th of February 1984, a leap year, a rare and special day that arrives once every 4 years is arguably no coincidence. There is no denying that he is certainly a rare and special individual.
He has had the thumbs up from artists such as Omar and Damage, and producers such as Mikey J and Terror Danjah. He has performed on some of the most prestigious stages in the UK, including holding a personal showcase at the renowned 10 rooms in London, and he has had huge underground success with his slow jam, ‘Is Your Love Exclusive’.
Uché’s mother bought him a toy microphone for his 3rd birthday, from then Uché knew he would be an entertainer. He was raised by his mother and auntie, as one of four brothers. “Not having a father around made me more determined to succeed”, he says, “my mother had to be strong to keep her boys on the right path.”
Songwriting came naturally to Uché, he recalls, “Until I grew older and started to read the album sleeves, I assumed artists wrote for themselves. I would use my keyboard to try and compose music for my songs. I remember once in 6th form, my music teacher lent me a school computer and keyboard over the holidays. I used to just stay at home and write and produce songs, time would fly and a day would feel like an hour. The first time I performed with a live band I was amazed at what the band did with my composition. After my performance, the audience stood and applauded. It was a wonderful feeling knowing they had enjoyed my music so much.”
In his youth artists such as Michael Jackson, Prince and Usher inspired Uché. His influences now include Donnell Jones, Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Jagged Edge, H-Town and Jodeci. At 13 years of age, keen to develop his abilities, Uché attended The Susie Earnshaw drama and dance school. Whilst there he formed a group with two friends; the group went on to feature on ‘Nickelodeon’. They also auditioned for Rapology, the prominent Choice FM talent show, but didn’t make the final. Three years later after leaving the group to pursue a solo career Uché once again entered Rapology and made it to the final.
After his win Uché continued to develop with a production company, formed by his producer, performing in venues such as Milton Keynes Empire where he supported R&B group, Damage, 10 rooms where he held his own personal showcase and Brixton Recreation where he supported acts So solid and Dizzee Rascal.
At aged 20 he released the promo single, "Is Your Love Exclusive". The track was supported by London stations, Choice FM, Kiss FM, BBC 1xtra and specialist stations. DJ’s such as Masterstepz, Heartless Crew and Serious & Sabre, all took to the smooth sounding voice of Uché. But during this time he developed an illness which left him unable to sing. After various attempts at different medications he and the doctors were successful. His health began to improve and he made the decision return to the studio in June 2006 to re-record "Is Your Love Exclusive", his new single "Tomorrow I’m Gone" and to start recording his album.
