MAXWELL D
From tabloid headlines to the D&B and garage scenes Maxwell D is a familiar name to many people. Once a member of the Pay As You Go Cartel, Maxwell D has gone through the highs and lows of life and the music industry and has come out the other side with his mixtape Misunderstood. Maxwell was first introduced to music via his father, DJ Natty B from Choice FM. Maxwell D used to perform at his fathers sound system gigs where he would MC and soon learnt the skills he would use later in his career. It was the emergence of the Drum & Bass scene that captured the heart of Maxwell and his friends. "We used to sneak into clubs. I used to watch the MC and he inspired me to be something." I could chat ragga but I realised my dream of being an MC could be reality through Drum & Bass. I used to hook up with a friend to practice and do little tapes. Our dream soon began to come true." Maxwell was in demand at every house party in his area and also many club events. He managed to get a slot on a pirate station, Rinse FM, with his friend, Nikki Slimting and their regular hangout was the Orange Club at the Hippodrome and by 1997 Maxwell was a regular on the Drum & Base circuit. In September 1999 MAXWELL was introduced to Relentless Recordings who immediately noticed his talents and signed him to their label. Maxwells debut single SERIOUS was released and tore up the UK GARAGE dance floors. It also successfully made it into the charts, which led Maxwell to join the Pay As You Go Cartel. It all happened so fast, from jail to house and garage to a music video space in a year and half! Pay As You Go did well." They got to number 13 in the uk charts which was a highlight........ Negative publicity meant Garage became unpopular with clubs and so the scene began to loose popularity. Inward divisions caused the spilt of the Pay As You Go Cartel and Maxwell D returned to his solo career, writing in New York and opening his own studio. .. He returned with the track REASON which talked about his situation and the story and showed a more mature side of his music. Maxwell reflects; "I began to concentrate on me. I released MAX IS BACK which got me back in the scene." Maxwell D wrote a song for his lil sis called ILL BE THERE which is on his 1st mixtape MISUNDERSTOOD. People were really touched by the words. It made him realise what people wanted so he then started working with some new artistsMaxwells own label MUSKETEAR RECORDINGS is taking a fresh new angle on UK Urban sounds. " Im doing this all by myself, my own label my own money" Says Maxwell. This mixtape shows that he's grown up, he's more mature." Its like a documentary as there are interviews in between tracks which say what he's about. There is rock and hip hop on there and a track with mobo award winner DEXPLICIT called WHERE YOU BEEN which is getting a lot of love right now."
