KILLA KELLA
Killa Kela is a multi-vocalist one-man orchestra who has stunned audiences across the globe. His trademark sound incorporates drum & bass, very realistic vocal scratching, and “samples” of popular songs, which he verbally imitates.

28 now, he has been beat-boxing since he was a kid in West Sussex. He grew up in a musical house: his father played drums in a covers band and his mother was into Motown and soul. Around the age of 6, he invented his own beats - `I was making noises all around the house` he says. I was possibly because his father would not let him play his drum kit and so he tried to copy the sound with his mouth, while playing with toys and watching cartoons.

At the age of 13, he heard hip hop for the first time and was amazed by the possibility of conjuring up whole songs using just the mouth. At 17, Kela had his first opportunity to express himself: the sounds went down at a Company Flow Show and he started doing their beats, and when the lights came on, everyone saw it was him. The record label Jazz Fudge saw he had talent and took him on the ‘Balance‘ European tour of 1999 alongside Canada and the UK’s own ‘Taskforce‘.

The chance came when he sent a tape to DJ Vadim, who immediately invited him down his studio. After that, they started touring together for 2 years and Kela`s undeniable talent won him many admirers. Through Vadim, he also became a member of the world famous Scratch Perverts team and the legendary New York based Rocksteady Crew.

He has worked with Timberlake, Pharrell Williams, Redman and Public Enemy and has toured with Busta Rhymes and the Super Furry Animals. In 2000, he played more than 250 live shows in more than 17 countries. He even performed at the ‘Battle of the Year’ in Germany, one of the biggest hip hop showcases in the world and also featured on the accompanying soundtrack compilation with Germany’s DJ Hype/ The Arsonists / and Denmark’s DJ Static.

Kela has even put together his Spit Kingdom crew: Spider J (piano), Rookwood (vocals) and MC Trip (hype man). Spit Kingdom collectively is a sound system, a live show, a club night every Tuesday; and a club night every month in Europe. It's a collective of people that share the same mind and the same ideas of music.

After a seven-year apprenticeship, he has signed to SonyBMG and released his vivid, full of tunes, street-cool album, "Elocution". In the album, that was partly recorded in a flat in Hackney, and partly done in Strongroom Studio in Shoreditch, Kela tries to broaden and take beat-boxing to a wider audience. His first big single "Secrets" was released on April 24, 2006, and shows he can sing in his sweet, high, melodic voice and beat-box at the same time.
