ENVY

“It’s the divine coincidence between Envy’s brain-jangling lyrics, delivered with a dizzying fluidity, and the gorgeous texture of beats and melody that she surrounds it with…Essential”. DJ Mag.

Stop Start presents Envy, a 20 yr-old rapper/ MC from Manchester. Already making big shockwaves on the grime and UK hip-hop scene, Envy waxes deep lyrical over the cool, smoky beats of Medasyn (Lady Sov/ Shystie), with a bold, unhurried flow that smacks of future stardom.

Writing lyrics from the age of 12, beginning with songs for singers, it wasn’t until the age of 15, when she developed an interest in hip-hop that Envy decided to put her lyrics to rap beats. Influenced by artists such as Nas, TLC, Missy Elliot and Ms Dynamite, Envy developed a passion for rapping and began playing around with her flow developing her unique and original sound with every new track.

Her music profile was raised through her involvement in numerous rap battles taking place in and around Manchester. Winning the acclaimed freestyle competition ‘Battlescars’ in March 2006 brought Envy both respect and publicity, and this led to an entry into the ‘Scribblejam qualifiers’ in association with the jump off with some of the best battlers in the UK, followed by an invite to open the MOBO awards 2006. Envy stormed a string of recent gigs in Germany, London and her hometown, supporting 50 Cent’s G-Unit in November to promote ‘Tongue Twister’. She has also supported Kano as part of his ‘Home Sweet Home’ tour performing in front of thousands.

Early radio support has come from 1Xtra, XFM, Mary Anne Hobbs at Radio 1, and a session on The Breeze Block. The video for ‘Tongue Twister’ is directed by top UK talent Mustapha Kseibati.

First of the remixes here comes from Goldielocks; an up-and-coming artist and producer from Croydon, whose catchy hooks, hot looks and production savvy have brought her to the attention of many an A&R man. She has done quite a few commercial remixes but has a clear passion for Grime and has collaborated in some fashion with Example, Tinchy Stryder and Roll Deep's Frisco, as well as Kate Nash and now Envy! She is set for the imminent release of her first single "Wasteman".

Second up we have seminal grime artist Medasyn (aka Caspa Codina), who puts a unique dub spin things, and is followed by the mysterious LingLing. Very little is known of this New York area outfit, including whether it gets its name from the female half of the famous Panda twins or a local Chinese restaurant. The former is suspected because it is known that there are two seemingly inseparable girls in most of their photos. They appeared along with Black Dice, Ratatat and Battles on The Television Personalities Remixes EP (Domino) and have also done remixes for Crystal Castles and Leyode. Notorious for their legendary underground opus 50/50, they are also frequent collaborators with underground U.S. "avant-garde” hip-hop artists including Addiquit, whom they feature in their upcoming single and video "Get Right".

Bitten by the remix bug upon remixing the track "Judy" for the band that he formed called the Pipettes, Monster Bobby is also their guitarist and a contributing songwriter, and here does another fine job with Envy. More recently, he received wide critical acclaim for his solo album "Gaps". His remixes are quite unique and innovative whilst slyly paying homage to his many influences, from the very earliest innovators of electronic music like Joe Meek and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop all the way to Girls Aloud. Lately he has done remixes for Stuart James and Strange Idols as well. He is very active outside of these endeavours and is starting his own label called Little Other Records, about which little is yet known. His next solo album is forthcoming and is due to be entitled "Forty Winks", which will feature 40 one-minute songs about sleep.

Next up, Robot Koch, the insatiable German hip-hop producer who tours the world with his critically-acclaimed acts Jahcoozi and also The Tape. Continuing to churn out heavy beats for artists like Infinite Livez (Ninja Tune/Big Dada), Justine Electra (City Slang), Raz Ohara (Kitty Yo), Data Mc (Hamton), Al Haca (Klein) and Christopher Wiltis (Ghostly International), he links up here with Envy in 2008, with an ostentatiously bangin’ take on Tongue Twister.

And lastly, Hamacide- the ’musical half’ of Leyode, whose debut "Fascinating Tininess" came out in 2007 on Warp’s Prefuse 73's own label, Eastern Developments. The dreamy filmic quality of Leyode is put aside for his remix, with its more jerky off-kilter yet sample-laden electro stew, putting a different and unexpected slant on Envy's masterpiece.

With her charismatic hip-hop/grime flavour, she is set to breakthrough for the northern scene and set the pace for her London counterparts.
