DIZZEE RASCAL
|
"My teachers all called me rascal," Dylan Mills has said, explaining the name Dizzee Rascal. Dizzee, who grew up in Bow, east London, was raised by a single mother on a council estate.
After getting kicked out of several schools, Dizzee found he enjoyed one particular music class, and with support from his instructor, he began making his own productions on a classroom computer.
Taking cues from a host of admired U.S. MCs, Dizzee began to develop his song-writing skills, which began to take on an increasingly introspective quality as he drew from his own life and various mind states.
When Dizzee recorded the underground white-label single "I Luv U", he had just started to make a name for himself in the U.K. garage scene, as a member of Roll Deep Crew.
Dizzee, Roll Deep, and other MCs were responsible for developing a more aggressive and abrasive version of garage, soon known as grime.
"I Luv U" became one of grime`s key singles and paved the way for Dizzee’s first full-length album, released in July 2003.
In 2003 Dizzee won the Mercury Prize. Since then, Dizzee has supported Justin Timberlake, made a guest appearance on stage with N.E.R.D. and is building his reputation Stateside.
In September 2004, Dizzee released "Showtime" worldwide.
